Course Description

Rec Prep: Eligibility for Engl 001A and Reading 053. History 017A is a survey of the political, economic, and social and cultural development of the United States from the pre-Colonial period through the Civil War. Topics covered include indigenous and European influence on the development of the colonies, the causes and consequences of the War of Independence, the ideological origins of republicanism and principles of the United States Constitution, early industrialization, westward expansion, foreign policy, sectional conflict, slavery and its impact on race relations, abolition and other reform movements, and the Civil War. Pass/No Pass Option. Transfer: UC/CSU
